TRiO at the Capitol

posted Feb 10, 2012, 11:21 AM by Stephen Thompson

Greetings fellow TASPians and TRiO Project personnel,

As some of you may know, TASP received a financial award by COE to promote TRIO awareness among our state legislators.  The TRiO at the Capital committee composed of myself, Nancy Blois-Giles (ETS- MTSU), Crickett Pimentel (SSS-MTSU)and Jeanne Stokes (ETS, UB – Tusculum College)  have decided that we will do so by creating and displaying approximately 15-20 large posters in the hall of the Legislative Plaza of the state capitol. The TRiO at the Capitol event will take place on April 3, 2012 in Nashville.

TASP is in immediate need of volunteers representing TRIO programs throughout the state to prepare and present posters featuring the mission, statistics and current participants of their TRIO programs.  All TRiO programs are encouraged to participate in this important event.  It is a wonderful opportunity for you to demonstrate the effectiveness of your program and showcase the achievements of your participants to legislators from your districts.  State legislators will receive a personal invitation to have lunch in The Lounge with the TRiO program personnel, participants and parents who participate in TASP’s debut at the Capitol.

Each poster must be designed as a PowerPoint file with the Page Set-Up set to 32”X40” (portrait orientation). TRiO projects will send their posters in the form of an email attachment to: nancy.blois-giles@mtsu.edu.  The posters will then be printed at no cost to your program.  Details of the required format of the poster are forthcoming as are the deadlines for committing to participate in this event and submitting the PowerPoint file.  TASP has access to easels at MTSU which can be used to display the posters.

TASP will reimburse TRiO program personnel and participants for expenses incurred during travel at a rate of $.46/mile and will provide lunch on the day of the event.  Additionally, presenters travelling more than 150 miles to attend this event will be given $5.00pp to assist them in purchasing a meal either en route to or returning from the TRiO at the Capitol event.

Posters will be on display between 9:00 am and 1:00 pm on the day of the event.  TRiO at the Capitol committee members and assistants will arrive at the Legislative Plaza at 8:00 am on April 3rd to set up the posters and easels.  Lunch will be available between 11:30am and 1:00 pm during which time participants will be encouraged to meet with their representatives. Program personnel whose travel time to Nashville exceeds 3 hours may consider a 10:30am arrival time but we do not wish  to encourage participants arriving late for this event as our impact will be directly related to the organization of our presentation and the number of participants present in the Legislative Plaza.

Please express your interest in participating in TRiO at the Capitol by replying to this email.  Provide your Name, Title, TRiO Program, and Sponsor institution, and phone number.  We greatly look forward to hearing from you and working with you to promote TRiO.
